At eight in the morning, Olivia arrived at the Kresge building ready for another day of the unexplained and she found it, though this time it was in the form of a young woman lounging inside one of Walter's specimen tanks, wearing nothing but lingerie.

While she was normally very reserved about revealing her emotions, she couldn't help but blurt out, “What the hell?”

Peter appeared to be the only one in the lab at the moment, sat at one of the work tables taking apart something electronic, giving a loud sigh. “I don't know. She was here when I got here. Walter seems to think she's a pet.”

As if on cue, Walter came trotting into the lab with Astrid not far behind. He held a plastic bag from the campus book store of which he removed a few magazines, hurrying over to the glass tank; climbing up the lab's small stepladder, he leaned over the side of the tank, lowering the magazines down to the girl, who sat up to receive them.

“Here you are, my dear! I had my lab assistant help me pick them out. Do you like them?”

The girl nodded as she browsed the titles, lying back down.

“Walter, who is she?” Olivia asked, still hovering close to Peter.

“She's my Aquarium Girl,” he said nonchalantly as he retrieved a tupperware container filled with the second breakfast he usually ate at the lab.

Olivia raised an eyebrow. “What is she doing here?”

Walter rolled his eyes. “She's my aquarium girl.”

Astrid, who was carrying a cardboard box of assorted knick-knacks, explained the situation. “She's like a living piece of furniture. Or art. Or a fancy conversation piece.”

Olivia glanced back at the tank uneasily. “I don't know...”

“Walter's insisting we try her out for the day and then he'll get rid of her if we still feel the same way at the end of the day.” Peter shook his head.

“This is so weird,” Olivia muttered as she watched the older man dangling bits of his breakfast into the giant tank.

“She likes bacon!” Walter squealed happily as the girl ate out of his hand.

At ten o'clock, Peter decided to go over to study the lab's newest arrival. The girl in the aquarium lie on raspberry and burgundy throw pillows of silk and velvet, some being trimmed with gold and some with tassels. Her long curled hair spilled in chocolate falls, her sunkissed skin brilliant as she stretched her long legs along the soft cushions. She gave a soft sigh and looked up at Peter with heavily lidded eyes lined with kohl. He stared down at her for a moment longer then went over to Astrid who was cataloguing some slides Walter had stolen from one of the labs upstairs.

“What's her name?” Peter asked as he leaned against the table she was working at.

Astrid glanced over at the tank and shrugged. “Just 'Aquarium Girl', I think.”

“Is that her first name or her full name?” he asked sarcastically.

Astrid continued writing in her log book, but an amused smile played at her lips. “Peter, you're just jealous that you didn't find her.”

Peter made a face. “All she does is lie around. And read.”

“And eat,” Astrid added.

“She eats as much as Walter,” Peter said with a frown, looking over at the two doughnut boxes and four Big Mac wrappers in the garbage can—it wasn't even ten o'clock and she'd already put away all that junk food. “Doesn't she weird you out?”

Astrid paused in her writing and looked up at him. “Peter, I work here. Aquarium Girl is human, alive, quiet, doesn't get in my way, hasn't mutated, and hasn't attacked anyone. At this point, she's probably the greatest thing we've ever had in the lab.” There was a loud mooing from across the lab. “Except for Gene of course.”

At eleven o'clock Olivia tapped at the glass to catch the attention of the Aquarium Girl, only to have Walter reprimand her from across the lab.

“Don't tap the glass!”

The young woman lowered her magazine and looked up at her. Olivia gave her a slight wave.

“Hi. I'm Olivia.” She tuck her hair back behind her ear. “Um, I was wondering if you're all right.”

The woman smiled and nodded.

“I meant, I was wondering if you feel objectified doing this. I'm not really even sure what the circumstances of you being here is, but I know Walter has a way of manipulating things...” Olivia gave a nervous laugh. “I just want to make sure you're not here against your will and that you're all right.”

Aquarium Girl nodded, rolling onto her side which made her seductive curves all the more obvious.

“Well, if you need anything, let me know, okay?” Olivia asked.

Aquarium Girl smiled at Olivia and placed her hand on the glass. Olivia fit her fingers on the glass as well so that their palms were aligned. Aquarium Girl seemed pleased with this response, her large eyes staring into Olivia's before rolled onto her back once more and began to read her magazine.

Satisfied, Olivia went over to the front of the lab where Peter was waiting, bundled in his peacoat and scarf for the outside weather they were about to brave. As Peter helped her into her own coat, she smiled at him and said,

“I like her.”

At one o'clock, Walter nudged Astrid gently in the ribs.

“I think she likes you,” he murmured to her, grinning broadly.

Astrid looked across the lab to the tank where Aquarium Girl lie on her stomach watching them, twirling her hair around her index finger slowly.

“No,” Astrid said, though her eyes widened as she realised from this angle it looked as though Aquarium Girl was completely naked.

“She's staring at you,” he said even louder, his voice betraying his excitement.

Astrid averted her eyes back to the files she was sorting through. “Walter.”

“You're blushing!” he laughed.

“I'm trying to work!” Astrid insisted, her eyes glancing upwards one more time to catch Aquarium Girl wink at her.

At two o'clock when his assistant Farnsworth went to get coffee, leaving him alone in the lab, Walter brought the stepladder over to the tank once moreand leaned over top to look down at the dark haired beauty lying atop the pillows at the bottom of the tank. She bat her lashes at him curiously and he removed a small sandwich bag from his coat pocket, dangling it above her.

“Would you like some marijuana? It's my own special blend,” he asked quietly.

Her eyes widened and her gentle smile became a giddy grin as she beckoned him into the tank.

At two thirty Astrid returned to the lab to find the lights low and the smell of pot heavy. She sighed, rolling her eyes for a second time that day and began to search out the scientist. To her surprise she found him in the tank, lying next to the Aquarium Girl in a haze of smoke.

“Walter, what are you doing?” she asked as she set the coffees down on a nearby counter.

“We're getting high,” he said, in the process of rolling another blunt on the Aquarium Girl's stomach.

Astrid crossed her arms. “Walter.”

“Come join us—Peter and Olivia will be gone for a while.” Walter and Aquarium Girl both gave her encouraging smiles.

Astrid frowned, but had to admit she was jealous of how relaxed the girl and the scientist looked. “Okay, but only for a moment.”
///

At three thirty Astrid was lying at the bottom of the tank, her cardigan off and blouse unbuttoned, Aquarium Girl sandwiched comfortably between her and Walter. Walter had the label maker and was busy typing out labels for random things such as his belt, her cardigan and Aquarium Girl's pillows. The pot was long gone and the smoke was still somewhat thick in the tank, but they were all relaxed and enjoying the high they were on.

“She has six fingers!” Astrid suddenly declared as she held Aquarium Girl's hand.

“And they're all fully functional and beautiful.” Walter quickly typed 'six' and stuck it to Aquarium Girl's hand. “Have you ever wanted to be a mermaid?”

Aquarium Girl shrugged.

“I'm very sure I could turn you into a mermaid if you wanted,” Walter pondered as he typed out 'mermaid mermaid mermaid' on the label maker.

“This tank isn't big enough for a mermaid. It's hardly big enough to fit all three of us,” Astrid pointed out as she stared up at the ceiling.

Walter continued babbling. “I would have the FBI build you a bigger tank, one that would take up an entire wall. And I would make you a coconut shell bra...”

“That's for hula girls,” Astrid reminded him.

“Well, I can tell you that starfish over the nipples isn't as comfortable as one might think...”

Aquarium Girl and Astrid exchanged looks.

“You're very pretty, Aquarium Girl,” Astrid admitted once Walter stopped his rambling.

Aquarium Girl made a very content noise as she rest her head on Astrid's shoulder.

“I want to train her to understand quantum physics!” Walter declared loudly after a few minutes, rolling onto his side to face them.

“How will you do that?”

“I'll give her textbooks instead of magazines. She seems smart enough to learn a few tricks.” Walter then added, “And maybe balance the receipt books.”
///

It was eight o'clock when they finally decided to call it a night. Peter was walking Olivia to her car which left Walter alone with Astrid. At the moment they were standing at the tank, looking at the Aquarium Girl.

Walter put his arm over Astrid's shoulder, pulling her close. “She's lovely, isn't she?”

Astrid nodded, resting her head on his shoulder. “She really is.”

“Can we keep her?” Walter asked.

Astrid looked up at him. “I don't know...”

“I promise I would buy her all the food and lingerie and pillows she could ever want. I'd wash her tank and give her pot and never tap the glass...”

Astrid laughed and rolled her eyes. “Sometimes you're just too much, Walter. C'mon, let me get you ready to go.”

Walter hummed a happy tune to himself as Astrid helped him out of his lab coat and into his coat, scarf, and hat. Peter arrived a moment later, turning off the lights in the lab.

“Okay Walter, let's go.”

“Let me say good night to her!” Walter cried out, hurrying back to the glass tank where Aquarium Girl waited.

Aquarium Girl was lying on her side; she looked up at him dreamily, a content smile on her face. Walter smiled at her, able to see that she was ready to fall asleep.

“Nighty-night, Aquarium Girl,” Walter whispered fondly before he kissed the glass tank. “Sleep well and we'll see you in the morning.”
